Ferrod's Interception

A couple weeks ago, I was painting a waterscape backdrop for a popular video game I'm working on contract, and realized "wow.. I can actually paint water fairly well". And so I took those newly learned skills and created this painting. Ferrod's interception is about an ill fated voyage of a pirate ship heading towards a mysterious isle named Haddross. Unfortunately for them, legendary Ferrod Serpent Dragons protect the boundaries of the isle.
Time to complete was about 25 hours.
I really enjoyed putting this one together, there are a few background elements that had to be rendered in 3d, otherwise 80% of the image is painted. I guess my mechanics concept was really tested in this one, I learned a lot from this Thanks for checking it out.

Closer moon orbit, violent tides, dirty technology, you name it.
As far into the future it is, I still think you will see old fashion buildings from today, just like we still see building from the early medieval ages today in europe for example.
I noticed a lack of recent character painting in my portfolio so I decided to start a new one. My biggest challenge is to avoid overloading the scene with detail, which usually happens in my character work. In this case, the direction changed several times, from a half bio woman bot to an ethereal presence. At some point I decided to kill a LOT of detail and spend time refining her lines and lighting.
Exitium is "destruction" in latin.

I did this matte to put some diversity in my portfolio, and of course the challenge. A challenge not only for me, but my computer nagged every brush stroke. The original size is 7000x4300 which pushed me to apply more detail than usual to achieve the photorealistic look. I wanted the end result to look like dreamy, serene scene, yet somewhat populated with man's machines roaming about. Simply put, the future co-existance of machine and human.

I did this matte painting for my own portfolio. Specifically.. I'm painting a series of sci-fi bases. This is the 3rd in the series and probably the last.
This particular base is under construction. It also serves as a hub for the global highway. In the foreground, an ion refueling station and several combat units heading toward the base to report.
Used CS2 and the good ol paint brush.
This piece really tested my abilities to paint living beings I've never studied before, ie.. the horse! I really underestimated how difficult the horse would be to paint, but I think I managed it ok. As for the ringwraith himself, the challenge was all the folds in his clothes.
The sky creates a unique color coming off all the objects so it had to be exactly the right color. Painting the snow was also challenging because of the detail and amount to be done.
The principle is this civilization runs lava through their bases and cities for energy. What better to use, than the planet's vaste reserve of lava?
I also tinkered a bit with some new custom brushes I made for the clouds and rocks which I think is a huge improvement over my previous paintings with rocks.
